Jilly from Philly
I paint the faces of people who move me, and this piece was all about a single moment — a laugh so full it pulled the whole face into it. I worked the half in shadow against the half lit up in clashing color, so the smile reads less like a portrait pose and more like a sound. The teeth, the squint, the way the cheek crowds the eye — those are the details I couldn't let go of. It isn't about who she is to everyone else; it's about how that one captivating, wide-open grin felt worth chasing across the canvas.
